Only two months ago Sam Sinns left his job dancing at Disney, packed up his house, and moved his family to PA to open Twirl, a brand new dance studio in Newtown Square. Looking for an adventure and eager to start the next chapter in their lives, Twirl is a dream come true for Sam and his family.

But Sam never set out to be a dancer. As a child his only exposure to dance was occasionally watching his older sister’s dance classes at a local dance studio. However, when he was 16 years old, this Orlando native was looking for something interesting to do for a job. Just for fun, he ventured into a dance audition for the Christmas parade at Walt Disney World, and with no performing experience and no dance training he got the job. That one audition changed his life. Dancing in the Christmas parade sparked a passion for dance that still burns today.

Sam held onto that parade dancer job as he earned a hospitality management degree from the University of Central Florida. Halfway through his sophomore year of college, at the suggestion of a fellow Disney dancer, he started taking dance classes as something fun to do on the side. “My dance partner in the Christmas show in front of Cinderella’s castle told me that I could be a pretty good dancer if I studied ballet,” explains Sam. “So I thought, ‘Okay, I guess that sounds cool,’ but I never really thought it would lead to anything.” He continued his training and after graduating from UCF he went to some auditions, started getting hired for dance jobs, and the rest is history.

Sam progressed from dancing in parades to being cast in shows at Disney World. He then performed two contracts at Tokyo Disneyland, danced on cruise ships, and eventually moved to New York City where he danced in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular and appeared in touring productions of West Side Story and Beauty and the Beast. Eventually Sam moved back to Orlando to get married and start a family. Back in his hometown, he returned to Walt Disney World to continue his dance career. Most recently he was an ensemble member in Finding Nemo the Musical and also the dance captain for the show.

After a long and extensive performing career, he was ready for a change and eager to pass on his knowledge of dance to a new generation. That vision became a reality in Twirl. Sam says with a smile, “Having worked for so long at Disney, I want my dance studio to reflect the values that I learned there. I want Twirl to have high quality, high standards, and I want it to be a happy place where everyone feels welcome and valued.” Offering solid training, he also hopes to attract students with an eye on dance as a career.

Twirl offers classes in ballet, tap, jazz, musical theatre, hip hop, acrobatics, contemporary, preschool dance, and dance for students with Down syndrome. Adult dance classes are also offered on a drop-in basis with no long-term commitment. More information about Twirl can be found at www.twirlperformingarts.com.
