Summer Climbing Camps at Philadelphia Rock Gym

February 6, 2020

For over 25 years, the Philadelphia Rock Gyms has introduced Philadelphia and its surrounding suburbs to the spectacular sport of rock climbing!  The PRG has made indoor and outdoor rock climbing more accessible to Greater Philadelphia Area families through their introductory lessons, birthday parties, guided trips, after school programs and of course summer camps!

No matter which camp program parents select, each day of camp kids can expect to learn basic climbing safety procedures as well as technical skills for more efficient movement on the wall.  PRG Summer Camps also offer opportunities to strengthen mental muscles as well as physical muscles through the sport itself and through the comprehensive daily itineraries that make PRG Summer Camps so unique.  Kids are always busy at PRG’s highly structured Summer Camps!

“Climbing is satisfying, providing opportunities for accomplishing things you might never believe you could do… it’s powerful.  It teaches self-reliance as well as teamwork,” says President and Owner of the PRG, David Rowland.  “For all the teamwork and communication involved, climbing is also an incredibly individualistic sport,” says Liz Frey, Director of Youth Programs.  Liz has worked in the rapidly growing indoor climbing industry and has been an avid climber herself for over 12 years.  “Everyone works at their own pace in this sport and it’s all about taking things one step at a time.  We know success doesn’t exclusively come with reaching the top of the wall; success happens with each accomplished move.  That is what we focus on and center our teaching philosophy around at PRG.”

PRG’s Summer Climbing Camps offer Full Day Discovery Camp for ages 6 & up as well as Half-Day Discovery camps for 4 & up.  Extended Day options are also available for families with extra busy schedules.  This summer, camps run weekly from June 8th to September 4th Monday through Friday indoors at each PRG facility.  PRG also offers Adventure Camp for ages 9 & up which is a two-week program that preps both brand new and seasoned climbers for a two-day, one-night climbing and camping excursion at Ralph Stover State Park.

“For many of our Adventure Campers, the trip to Ralph Stover State Park is their first experience with tent camping or camping in general,” says Liz.  “Stover offers excellent rock climbing by Pennsylvania standards as well as a pristine primitive camping experience with established group camp sites and running water.   Most of the hikes to the climbs are relatively short and the climbing is beginner-friendly.  Plus, the views from the climbs are amazing; it’s certainly a memorable experience.”

Whether you are a budding outdoor enthusiast jumping into the Adventure Camp program or looking to dip your toe into the world of indoor climbing through PRG’s Discovery Camps, PRG has a unique and memorable summer climbing experience to offer!  For more information on PRG’s Summer Camps at all 5 (soon to be 6!) locations or to register for 2020 camps, visit www.philarockgym.com.
