After what felt like endless days of cooking, lunching, and snacking at home, my family-friendly meal rotation was getting a little stale. We were falling into a dinnertime rut and our produce drawer had seen better days. I set up my account on HungryHarvest.net and was excited to see that they deliver to my area. Hungry Harvest essentially rescues excess produce or grocery staples and delivers them as part of their Harvest packages or add-ons. Years ago farmers could sell all of their produce easily, regardless of shape and size, but these days stores and consumers have gotten a little picky about superficial stuff like appearance (but a carrot with a weird shape is still just as good for you!). Hungry Harvest packages up these rescued items and sends them to the shoppers, like me, who want them.

The best part of the entire ordering process is that the Harvest boxes are customizable. You’ll be able to see what’s coming in your order and customize it if needed. For my family of four, I chose a Mini Organic Harvest to start. I added it to my cart and selected my delivery start date. I was also able to note any foods on my never list - foods I don’t want included in my Harvest box. This was another great feature because it means there is less of a chance of food waste. I’m only ordering fruits and veggies that I want to try or that I know my family will enjoy. Like I said, my produce drawer has been a little neglected with some “good intentions” produce that I ordered or purchased elsewhere but never got around to using. Now I’ll be receiving only the items we need and will use.
Once our delivery day got closer I received a reminder to customize my harvest. I was able to log in and change any items I didn’t want and add things I did want. With this kind of flexibility, we get what we need and we can even plan meals around what will be arriving in our box. There aren’t any surprise items that I have to worry about using or going to waste.
Receiving a heads up of what was going to be delivered was helpful. Meal planning is a must-do for me in order to continue to serve healthy meals and snacks to my family and it helps me to prepare for the week’s meals and snacks. Once I knew what we were going to be receiving in our order I could plan my meals based on what produce we had chosen and could incorporate it as meals, side dishes, or snacks!
Ordering from Hungry Harvest was simple. I stayed on the website to explore a little (because there are so many additional grocery add-ons to see), but it took me just minutes to finish customizing my order and to add on any extras.
When delivery day came, I received a text notification letting me know my order was on the way, and then another once it had arrived. Deliveries from Hungry Harvest are no-contact, so it was nice to know when it was on the way and then to know when it had been delivered.
Everything arrived in perfect shape and I feel like it is worth noting that there was very little extra waste in the package itself - items were packaged safely, but there wasn’t much excess packaging - good for me and for the earth.
My produce drawer was happy again and filled with healthy options like organic blueberries, avocados, snap peas, and more. Our salads have variety, our side dishes have color, our snacks can include fresh fruit, and I didn’t even have to leave the house.
We are looking forward to our next Harvest. I felt like with our Mini Organic Harvest we have a good amount of produce to last us several days, but now that I see how easy it is to customize our order to our liking, I increased our next order to the Full Organic Harvest knowing that we’ll receive items we like and that won’t go to waste. We can also change our delivery frequency to bi-weekly, though with a busy, hungry family, I think we’ll be able to continue making use of weekly deliveries!
What’s even better than fresh, healthy food being delivered right to my door is that every delivery saves at least 10 pounds of produce from going to waste and helps support the work of local hunger-solving organizations, as well as Hungry Harvest’s own food access initiatives, including community markets, pandemic relief programs, and donations. It feels good knowing that we are eating well and doing good!
