Your entire family will enjoy this year's Holiday Season performance of The Little Mermaid at Walnut Street Theatre. All of your favorite sea creatures will have you singing along and laughing, too as the cast of The Little Mermaid makes you feel like you floating under the sea right along with them.
We have been taking our children to see live theater performances of all kinds since they were young. We love giving them the experience of live performances and music and seeing a show in Philadelphia at The Walnut is always a special experience. Here are some of our tips for taking your kids to see this year's show.
Arrive early - Aside from being able to not feel rushed, I highly recommend arriving into town early. Grab a bite before the show (We love Barra Rossa, just a short walk from the theater). Be sure to get into the theater early as well. The Walnut is a beautiful historical theater (America's oldest!). When you arrive early you can not only get settled with your kids but you can relax downstairs in the Barrymore's Cafe which has snacks and drinks, you can find the restrooms and you can get to your seats as soon as doors open to see how magnificent it is. The theater was nearly empty when we were seated so we were able to walk up to see the orchestra pit and to really take in the excitement of the theater.
Enjoy a treat at Barrymore's Cafe - we arrived early and grabbed a seat in the cafe and enjoyed a treat and a drink. Intermission tends to be very busy at the cafe and while treats and drinks are available, with kids I recommend arriving early and grabbing your goodies before the show and enjoying them in the cafe.
Park nearby - you can take the train to Philadelphia which is a fun way to travel with kids but since we went to an evening show and it would be late getting home, we drove and easily found parking at the lot next to the theater. It was convenient and easy out after a fun but late night at the theater. There is plenty of other nearby parking available. Find more parking options here.
Get a group together - you can often get tickets for 15 people or more. The Little Mermaid is a wonderful family show and your entire family will enjoy it. Make it a holiday tradition attend the show with grandparents, cousins or friends. Find group ticket information here.
Enjoy a date with your child/children - Grab your dinglehopper and spruce up and make it a fun fancy night on the town - we look forward every year to our mother-son date night and enjoy the chance to wear our "handsome clothes" and enjoy a special night- we also spotted some young mermaids in the audience, too!
Booster seats are available for children who may need it. While I have not seen a bad seat in the theater and children will likely have a great view from anywhere, there are boosters available to place on the theater seats as needed.
Save a little on your ticket - family fun can come as a deal, too. There are select discounted ticket dates for The Little Mermaid, check the performance and ticket schedule here. Find general ticket discount options here.
Enjoy the magic along with them. I love to watch my children's reactions to the shows and musicals that we see but it's so fun to get caught up in the magic right along with them. It's a wonderful place to unplug from our technology and enjoy being present and magically entertained with our kids.
